JUGGLING ACT: Faced with the choice of raising taxes or slashing the county budget by up to $60 million because of cuts in state aid, Supervisor Maggie Kildee was willing to consider drastic measures--like abolishing county government. “I wouldn’t stand in the way of that at all,” Kildee said earlier this week. . . . Now, before anyone had a chance to toss that idea around, Gov. Pete Wilson has thrown the supes another hot potato: an optional sales tax that counties could keep--if supervisors take the political heat for putting it on the ballot (A1). In Ventura County, the idea landed with a resounding thud (B1).
