Carpenter’s Corruption Retrial Delayed

Share

The retrial of former Sen. Paul B. Carpenter on political corruption charges has been postponed so that he can undergo surgery for prostate cancer next month.

U.S. District Judge Edward J. Garcia agreed to postpone the case, which had been set to begin June 14. The ailing Democratic politician will need at least six weeks to recuperate from the surgery, said Carpenter’s attorney, Charles F. Bloodgood.

A new trial date has not been set but the earliest possible date would be in October, when Carpenter is scheduled to go on trial in a separate corruption case involving Capitol lobbyist Clayton R. Jackson.

Carpenter was convicted in 1990 on four counts of extortion, racketeering and conspiracy, but the conviction was overturned on appeal.
