LOS ANGELES : Guard at Watts Towers Killed on Way to His Car

A Watts Towers security guard was shot and killed Friday morning near the towers as he was walking to his car at the end of his shift, police said.

The guard, who worked for a private security company, was shot as many as six times about 5 a.m. in a park area near the visitors center in the 1700 block of East 107th Street, said Los Angeles Police Lt. Sergio Robleto.

Police withheld the victim’s name until family members could be notified. The guard’s weapon was found near his body, but it was unknown if it had been fired, Robleto said.

Investigators did not immediately find witnesses, Robleto said. He urged anyone with information to contact police.

“Right now we’re trying to see if there were any witnesses or anybody that can give us some lead as to what’s going on, because there’s absolutely no rhyme or reason right now,” Robleto said. “It’s just a senseless shooting.”
