Homelessness

* I felt it important to clarify and expand upon a statement attributed to me in a recent article (“Eye-Opening Lessons,” May 17). I do not feel that all adults living in homeless shelters are there due only to faults of their own. I am very aware of situations that can arise causing a person or family to become homeless at no fault of their own. My comment was made in reference to other types of volunteer work at different types of shelters. I feel that I can help the most in a shelter situation by working with the children.

I would also like to praise shelters such as Anaheim Interfaith that offer a new beginning and hope to homeless families by helping them get back on their feet and into their own homes. We need more programs that help people get back into the mainstream of life rather than just a bed for the night. I meant no disrespect to families and individuals who have had the misfortune to end up homeless.
