Geoffrey Cartoon

I take offense to Geoffrey’s cartoon (Commentary, April 26) which grossly depicts an Arab and a Jew in a stalled car representing the suspended Mideast peace talks.

Both caricatures play off of age-old stereotypes. The pre-Hitlerian depiction of the Jew is reminiscent of the anti-Semitic posters that were used to incite violent acts against Jews before World War II. The Arab character is depicted as unshaven, dirty, overweight and with sinister eyes.

While I understand that all cartoons need to caricature to some extent, I believe that Geoffrey has gone overboard. His depictions are insensitive and can only reinforce prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Jews.
