Share

The Glendale City Council has allocated $3.19 million in federal grants to fund social services, upgrade community buildings, revitalize neighborhoods and, for the first time, revitalize commercial buildings.

In hopes of stimulating local business, the city for the first time Tuesday decided to use Community Block Grant money to offer rebates of up to 50% to businesses that spruce up their facades, said Jeff Duran, assistant director of community development and housing.

For fiscal year 1993-94, $150,000 is allocated for businesses on Colorado Street and $100,000 on San Fernando Road.

A total of $1.5 million will go for neighborhood revitalization, including grants and low-interest loans to needy property owners; $180,000 was set aside for social service programs such as the Senior Employment Service, Armenian Assistance Counseling Service and Case Management for the Homeless. Community buildings, including the YWCA Shelter for Women, YMCA and M. L. Webb Center, are allocated $130,000.
