John Holland; Veteran of Theater, Cinema and Television

John Holland, singer and actor on Broadway, film and television for six decades, died May 21 in Woodland Hills. He was 85.
A native of Fremont, Neb., Holland studied liberal arts at Wichita State College and singing at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.
A veteran of opera and light opera in summer theater, he performed on Broadway as Captain Hook with Mary Martin in “Peter Pan” and toured in “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial.” He studied Shakespeare in England and performed frequently at San Diego’s Old Globe Theater.
In Hollywood, he had small roles in 275 feature films, including the 1939 film “Balalaika,” featuring Nelson Eddy, and the 1974 film “Chinatown” with Jack Nicholson. On television, he appeared in such series as “The FBI,” “Ironside,” “Wagon Train,” “McCloud” and “The Bob Newhart Show.”
