Commuters Will Be Rolling Under Some Graves in Oregon
An Oregon judge has ruled that a pair of railroad tunnels beneath a cemetery will not interfere with the eternal peace of about 1,000 souls whose survivors had sought to block excavation work.
Washington County Circuit Judge Hollie Pihl granted a right of way for the Tri-Met light rail system to build the tunnels for commuter trains 80 feet below Finleys Sunset Hills Cemetery in this suburb just west of Portland.
The judge on Wednesday rejected complaints of the cemetery owners and families of people buried in the hillside plots who said the constant rumble of commuter trains would disturb the graves.
Pihl ruled that the rights of grave owners did not extend 80 feet below the surface.
