The federal labor department Thursday said laws that led to the firing of a 14-year-old minor league batboy will not be enforced this season, and Georgia’s labor commissioner waived state laws entirely.
The moves clear the way for Tommy McCoy, 14, to return to work as a batboy for the Savannah (Ga.) Cardinals of the South Atlantic League. General Manager Ric Sisler said McCoy would be back with the team tonight.
McCoy was fired May 20 after the U.S. Department of Labor told Sisler that he was violating child labor laws limiting hours for children under 16.
