COMPTON : Investigation of Moore Campaign Mailer Sought

Share

City Clerk Charles Davis on Friday warned that a campaign mailer sent out by City Councilwoman Patricia Moore may constitute mail fraud, and said he will ask the local postmaster to conduct an investigation.

The mailer is emblazoned with the city seal and the words “Official City of Compton election petition enclosed.” It contains a letter from Moore on city letterhead in which she condemns her fellow council members for voting in favor of a card casino development without submitting the issue to a vote of residents. Moore, who is running for mayor in Tuesday’s election, urges recipients to sign the enclosed petition demanding a referendum and return it to the “People’s Right to Vote Initiative” within 48 hours. The words, “paid for by the Southern California Advance Team,” a group supporting Moore, are stamped in tiny print at the bottom of the envelope. The letter states that it was not printed at government expense.

Davis said at a news conference Friday that the mailer is misleading at best and has confused people. Moore accused Davis of making baseless allegations to damage her candidacy.
