FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Teacher Accused of Sex With Student

Share

A former Fountain Valley High School student-teacher has been arrested on charges of having sex with an underage former student after the girl’s mother discovered the alleged relationship and told police.

Patrick Wayne Martin, 34, was taken into custody at his Costa Mesa home earlier this week on two felony counts of oral copulation with a female under 18, said Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Jerry Holloway. He was released after posting $10,000 bail.

Martin spent the 1992 fall semester at Fountain Valley High in partial fulfillment of requirements for his teaching credential.

“Mr. Martin did a good job as a student-teacher for us,” said Principal Gary Ernst. “He was popular with students.”

Martin was working as an on-call substitute teacher for the Long Beach Unified High School District, said Helen Hansen, assistant superintendent of human resource services. The district has dropped his name from the list of substitute teachers because of his arrest, Hansen said.

Costa Mesa police began looking into the case after the mother of the 17-year-old girl told investigators about the relationship, which apparently started after Martin left Fountain Valley High.
