Farmers’ Market Is an Unwise Proposal

Share

I find it impossible to believe that the Santa Clarita City Hall has on file more than 500 requests supporting a farmers’ market. (“Site for Farmers’ Market Rejected,” May 25). In fact, I doubt that there are 500 farmers looking to do business in our fair valley.

We already have more than a dozen farmers’ markets doing business in Santa Clarita, and they offer many advantages over these itinerant peddlers.

First off, they are open seven days a week. Their produce is clean and beautifully displayed. And if you get a bad apple, they are here to cheerfully refund your money. They provide you with ample parking and they pay taxes.

People somehow think they get a superior product from the itinerant vendor. The fact is, the produce in Hughes comes out of a hole in the ground just like the itinerants’ produce.

When the itinerant sets up shop, he brings with him many problems with which we as a community have to deal. His trash blows about and his customers find it necessary to park where they are not wanted.

The itinerant farmer-peddler is a colorful concept but a lousy idea that should finally be put to rest!
