Save Money by Putting a New Handle on Old Faucet

Do you have an old, outdated faucet or tub/shower fixture somewhere in your home that you are thinking of updating?

Before you invest in a new fixture and pay a plumber to install it, consider the idea of replacing just the old handles and trim with new “universal fit” handles and trim.

Most homeowners do not realize that for a fraction of the cost of changing the entire fixture, you can achieve the objective of sprucing up the bathroom or kitchen just by replacing these parts, and you can do it yourself in minutes. Installation is very easy with no special tools.

Contact your local plumbing supply store to assure that it has a selection of universal fit handles. Remove one of the old handles from your faucet and take it to the store. Ask to see new handle sets that could work. Also, ask for new trim rings, or “escutcheons” if the old ones will not look right behind the new handle.

Keep in mind that even if you cannot find new handles with a stem adapter set to allow them to fit your old valve stems exactly, or if the tip of the old stem is damaged, many of the universal handle sets include a special metal “stem adapter” secured in place on the old stem with set screws so that the new handles can attach. Ask the clerk about this feature.

Universal handle sets come in both chrome and brass finishes and can be found in a variety of designs. Some incorporate wood or porcelain inlays to enhance the appearance. Cost ranges from about $25 to $65 per set, far less than the cost of replacing the entire unit.
