ENCINO : Vocational Campus Told to Close in ’94
A vocational school that has operated in Encino for a year without the proper zoning approvals was told Tuesday to phase out its bootleg campus.
The City Council’s Planning and Land-Use Management Committee adopted a requirement that all teaching activities at Pacific Coast College’s 16001 Ventura Blvd. campus cease by September, 1994.
Homeowners who have opposed the campus praised the planning panel’s decision. “It’s a reasonable compromise,” said Gerald Silver, president of Homeowners of Encino.
Pacific Coast--which trains nurses and currently has 368 students--violates city parking requirements and provisions of the Ventura Boulevard Specific Plan that seek to encourage retail shopping uses along the street.
The college initially sought the variances and exceptions it needed to legalize its operations. But recently it decided to discontinue its Encino campus after the city’s Board of Zoning Appeals granted the college some of the permits it needed--but with a long list of costly conditions attached.
