Monrovia : Council Weighs Cutbacks
The City Council on Tuesday discussed shutting Canyon Park one additional day each week and closing the Community Center on Saturdays at 4 p.m. as part of a delicate balancing act regarding the city’s 1993-94 budget.
Service reductions and fee increases are unavoidable next year, officials said, if the Legislature approves Gov. Pete Wilson’s proposal to take more property taxes from local government.
Canyon Park, an 80-acre nature preserve at the top of Canyon Boulevard in the north of the city, is already closed Tuesdays. The Community Center, the only one in Monrovia, offers a variety of recreational programs that might be subject to higher fees.
Although no decisions have been made, additional service reductions under consideration include eliminating the Meals on Wheels program, deferring new shelving for the library, contracting for fire dispatching services and reducing records services at the Police Department.
A special public hearing is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers to discuss increases in fees and charges for city services.
