The Region : Gang Hearings on Friday
A congressional hearing on gangs in the San Gabriel Valley will take place Friday at the El Monte Community Center.
The House of Representatives subcommittee on human resources will hear testimony on gang violence and suggestions for stemming gang problems, said Matthew Weintraub, assistant city administrator of El Monte.
U.S. Rep. Matthew G. Martinez (D-Monterey Park), chairman of the subcommittee, and Eni F. H. Faleomavaega, an American Samoan representative on the subcommittee, will listen to testimony from police officers, city officials, gang prevention workers and the public.
City officials say the goal of the hearings is to identify alternatives to gang membership, such as education and job training.
The hearing is from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the center, 3130 Tyler Ave.
