LOS ANGELES : Council OKs Combining Services for Homeless

Share

The Los Angeles City Council approved a proposal Wednesday to consolidate services for the homeless under a single new government organization.

The city and county plan to combine forces in the Los Angeles Services Authority, an organization designed to streamline the social services bureaucracy for the homeless and jointly operate emergency shelters, transitional housing and other services.

Coming on the heels of a study that found wide disparities in the efforts of Southland cities to address homelessness, the merger is seen as the first step toward developing a regional solution.

The proposed authority will have a budget of more than $5 million a year and will be governed by 10 commissioners appointed by the Board of Supervisors and the mayor.
