BELMONT STAKES / UPDATE : Without ‘Fancy Horses,’ Field Could Grow to as Many as 14

Kentucky Derby winner Sea Hero and Prairie Bayou, winner of the Preakness, are expected to be joined by 12 opponents for Saturday’s Belmont Stakes. A 14-horse field would be the largest for the final Triple Crown race since 1983, when Caveat won in a record 15-horse field. Asked why there would be such a large field, Sea Hero’s trainer, Mack Miller, said, “There aren’t any Seattle Slews or Secretariats or fancy horses in there.”

Others expected to run are Virginia Rapids, Cherokee Run, Arinthod, Colonial Affair, El Bakan, Antrim Road, Bull Inthe Heather, Wild Gale, Kissin Kris, Ragland Road, Silver of Silver and Only Alpha.

On a fast track, Sea Hero, a distant fifth in the Preakness three weeks ago, worked a half-mile Wednesday in 48 1/5 seconds. But the workout that startled clockers was Arinthod’s 58 2/5 seconds for five furlongs. Arinthod, who is owned by Sidney and Jenny Craig, is a French horse who has trained on, but never run on dirt.
