BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : League Reviewing Tapes of Brawl

Bobby Brown, American League president, said that he had viewed the videotape of Wednesday’s brawl between the Angels and Toronto Blue Jays, received the umpires’ report, and probably will decide Monday on possible suspensions and fines.

Manager Buck Rodgers said he expects several players on both teams to be suspended for at least one game. Angel center fielder Chad Curtis and Blue Jay third baseman Ed Sprague, who instigated the brawl, seem almost certain to be suspended.

J.T. Snow, who had a scraped arm and was spiked in the right knee during the melee, suffered the most extensive of the injuries among the Angels, but played Friday.

Catcher John Orton was unable to play Friday because of a sprained left thumb, but that injury occurred in a home plate collision earlier in the game, he said.

Reliever Troy Percival, whom the Angels protected on the 15-man roster instead of Bryan Harvey because they deemed him to be their stopper of the future, underwent season-ending elbow surgery Friday.

The operation, to remove calcification of a ligament, could jeopardize Percival’s career. Lewis Yocum, who performed the surgery, told the Angels that Percival will be sidelined for four months.

Snow, who began Friday’s game batting .112 since April 24, batted seventh again and will remain toward the bottom of the order until he ends his slump, Rodgers said.

“I sat down with him and told him, ‘You hit your way to the bottom of the lineup, now let’s see if you can hit your way up,’ ” Rodgers said.

There has been no discussion of sending Snow to triple A, Rodgers said, primarily because of Snow’s defense.

“He’s out there because he’s a good defensive ballplayer,” Rodgers said. “His glove is getting playing time, not his bat.”
