2 Suspects Arrested in ‘Worst’ Graffiti Spree

Ventura police arrested two suspects Saturday in connection with a spate of tagging incidents that hit 60 to 80 businesses and homes along Main Street between Ventura Avenue and Telephone Road.

Officials said they expect more arrests during the weekend.

Sgt. Carl Handy, head of the Ventura Police Department’s gang unit, said the vandalism spree, which occurred Wednesday and Thursday nights, is the worst graffiti vandalism ever in Ventura.

Police said the suspects, mostly juveniles and residents of Oxnard, are part of two Oxnard tagging crews who were in competition with each other.

Handy said the tagging is not gang-related. “It’s just recognition,” he said.

He said police will try to have the suspects, who were questioned Thursday but released at the time for lack of evidence, charged with felony vandalism and conspiracy.
