The Senate Appropriations Committee approved a $1.9-billion spending bill Tuesday that includes the remnants of President Clinton’s defeated stimulus package.

The supplemental spending bill, approved by a vote of 26 to 1, includes $200 million for summer jobs, $200 million for local law enforcement, $50 million for Amtrak and $70.5 million for rural waste water disposal loans and grants. The appropriations had been part of the $16.3-billion jobs bill that Clinton was forced to abandon in April after Democrats failed to break a Republican filibuster in the Senate.

The bill, which also includes supplemental funds for the Pentagon and other agencies, must still be approved by the full Senate, but eventual passage is expected.
