Judge Reduces Leona Helmsley’s Sentence: Leona Helmsley’s four-year prison sentence was trimmed by a federal judge, making her eligible for release early next year. Helmsley’s sentence was reduced to 2 1/2 years by U.S. District Judge Thomas P. Griesa. With time off for good behavior, her jail term should be reduced to approximately 21 months, Griesa said. The billionaire businesswoman, known especially for her New York hotels, was convicted in 1989 of evading $1.2 million in income taxes.
