Pierce Offers Classes for Older Students

Share

Pierce College is offering three summer courses designed to help older students get back into school, increase their self-esteem or pursue jobs that people of their gender traditionally do not enter.

“Sometimes people think a career may be inappropriate for their sex,” said Pierce spokeswoman Ina Geller. “Like if a woman wants to become a welder, but she is afraid because it is something women don’t usually do. Or if a man wants to become a secretary. So we’re offering preliminary classes to help them overcome those feelings.”

The federally funded New Horizon classes, offered separately from the regular summer courses, cost $10 each for six weeks, starting June 28. More information about the classes is available from (818) 719-6453.

Career Exploration meets Wednesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m., or Thursdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Self Esteem for Men and Women is scheduled for Mondays between 6 and 8:30 p.m., or Wednesdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. Study Skills for Re-Entry Adults will meet Tuesdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m., or from 6:30 to 9 p.m.

“The re-entry class is for people who have been out of school for a while, and who are often afraid to come back and compete with the younger students,” Geller said. “This will set the stage if they want to go on to pursue a college education.”
