Milward Simpson; Former Governor, Senator From Wyoming
Milward Simpson, 95, former governor and U.S. senator from Wyoming. Simpson, the father of U.S. Sen. Alan Simpson, was known as a staunch defender of states rights and a strong opponent of capital punishment. He commuted both death sentences that crossed his desk during his four-year term as governor from 1954 to 1958. The Republican lawyer was elected to the Senate in 1962, but was forced to retire after five years because of severe arthritis and Parkinson’s disease.
