World IN BRIEF : NIGERIA : 2 Civilians Vie in Vote for Presidency
Two millionaire businessmen vied for the leadership of poverty-stricken Nigeria in elections to select the first civilian president since the military took over the country in 1983. Results are expected by Tuesday or Wednesday. One candidate, Bashir Tofa, was unable to vote because he arrived late at the polling place in Kano in northern Nigeria and officials said he had failed to register. His rival, Moshood Abiola, voted in Lagos. Nigeria’s much delayed transition to civilian rule is scheduled to take place Aug. 27.
