Lockheed to Lay Off 400 at Air Base: The feeble commercial aircraft market will force Lockheed Corp. to lay off all but 50 of the 450 workers at its Boeing jetliner repair facility at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino, the company said. The Lockheed Commercial Aircraft Center, which had 850 employees last year at the base, runs out of work next month when the last of two 747 jumbo jets is delivered to the Australian airline Qantas. The remaining employees at the 2-year-old facility will maintain about a dozen 747s owned by banks and leasing companies that are deferring repairs until new owners can be found. Lockheed spokesman John Dailey said Lockheed will not abandon the facility, in which it has invested $30 million. The company will seek repair work for other commercial and military aircraft.
