LA HABRA : New Schools Budget Includes No Cuts

Share

The La Habra City School District Board of Education has adopted a $20.7-million budget for the 1993-94 school year without having to cut jobs or programs.

While several Orange County school districts cut employees and services, the La Habra district offered its teachers a 2% pay raise and is planning to hire 10 to 13 new teachers.

District Supt. Richard Hermann said the budget passed last week may be revised after the state budget is passed. Although the school district’s budget looks healthy now, he said, “we’ll have to look at it again later.”

Hermann said the district did not make any cuts in the new budget because major cuts were made two years ago when 32 teachers’ aides and three maintenance workers were laid off, 10 teaching jobs were not filled, and class size rose from 28 to 30 pupils per classroom.

“So I don’t think we’re any different from other districts,” he said.

Nevertheless, the tentative 1993-94 budget, which includes a $1.5-million reserve, looks good for now, district officials and employees agreed.

“We try to be conservative and careful . . . ,” Trustee Nancy S. Zinberg said. “I hope we get the money (from the state). I’m nervous about that.”
