A Sun Valley seventh-grader was awarded the top prize Tuesday in a poster contest sponsored by merchants and residents.

Roselyn Vien, a student at Richard E. Byrd Middle School, won first prize and a $150 U. S. Savings Bond.

The contest promoting recycling and environmental awareness was sponsored by the Sun Valley Residents’ Assn. and the Sun Valley Kiwanis Club.

“One of the biggest problems in our area is a lack of a sense of community,” said Jan Liptak, who heads the association. “Most of us who live here feel that youth do not have many opportunities.”

Johnson Truong, a classmate of Vien’s, won an honorable mention for artistic merit and a $100 savings bond. Ten other entrants won tickets to Magic Mountain.

When community groups get involved in the public schools, it helps teach, said Cheryl Stone, an art and math teacher at Richard E. Byrd Middle School, who encouraged her students to enter the contest.
