A fourth of the women-owned businesses in Orange County posted sales increases of 20% or more last year, according to a recent survey.

That’s slightly higher than the national average among women-owned companies, and it is remarkable considering the troubled economy, said the National Foundation for Women Business Owners, which conducted the survey. The foundation is the research arm of the National Assn. of Women Business Owners, which has an Orange County chapter.

Nearly one in three local association members run businesses with revenue of $1 million or more. That compares to only 23% of members nationwide whose companies are that large.

Locally, 63% of members say they expect sales to increase this year, and 16% said they are planning to increase staff.
