Hubert Wins Mini Stock Main at Ventura, Regains Points Lead

The Mini Stock oval track season points race is becoming a hotly contested battle between Gary Hubert of Camarillo and Gary Swenson of Port Hueneme.

Friday night, it was Hubert’s turn once again to regain the points lead with the victory in the 15-lap main event at Ventura Raceway.

After starting in sixth on the grid, Hubert took the lead on the start of Lap 3 after Joe Silva of Port Hueneme and Mike Raschke of Ventura, who were battling for the lead, both spun out in Turn 4.

Hubert went on to his fifth victory of the season.

Raschke was second and Bruce Dunson of Santa Barbara finished third. Swenson’s fourth-place finish helped to propel Hubert back into the points lead.

Bill Bartels of Culver City edged closer to Street Stock points leader of Oxnard with a win in the 20-lap feature.

Tom Stephens of Ventura was second and James Weston of Santa Barbara, third. Moore, who had to leave the track on Lap 12 when his hood came loose, came back to finish fifth and maintain his points lead over Bartels.

Jody Houchin of Ventura swept the main events in the Pony Stock division, going flag-to-flag in the 15-lap oval main. Houchin took the inside track on Lap 5 of the figure-eight main event and went on to win the eight-lap feature.

Scott Pounds of Santa Maria won his second IMCA Modified main event at Ventura this season.

Ernie Malone of Ojai won the Mini Stock figure-eight main.

Heat race winners were Scott Olson of Ventura and Weston (Street Stocks); Hubert and Swenson (Mini Stocks); Pounds (IMCA Modifieds); and Boucher and Houchin (Pony Stocks).
