The U.S. attorney’s office announced Thursday that an Alhambra man had been sentenced to 46 months in federal prison and fined $7,500 after being found guilty of attempting to extort payments from an Orange County restaurant owner by the use of vandalism and threats of violence.

Federal prosecutor John J. Byrne Jr. said evidence introduced at trial showed that Johnny Zin Chan, 31, and others acting at his direction threatened the victim with violence to her and her children if she did not make payments. Chan and his confederates also attached a Buddhist death doll to the door of the victim’s Laguna Beach restaurant and slashed her tires, Byrne said. As a result, the victim was forced to sell her house and move.
