BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Ligament in Arm of Reed Is Torn

Share

The injury Jody Reed suffered when the Colorado Rockies’ Andres Galarraga kicked him while sliding into second base during a game June 15 is more severe than originally diagnosed.

Results from a magnetic resonance imaging exam that Reed took Tuesday confirmed that he has a partial tear of a ligament in his left arm and will be sidelined for at least another two weeks. The good news is that the tear is not in Reed’s throwing arm.

Reed was put on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 16. It is the first time in his professional career he has been on the disabled list and it comes at a time when he was on a hot streak offensively, batting .373 with 14 runs batted in in his last 25 games. He has made only one error in his last 42 games.

Galarraga was not punished by the National League for his slide.

“What message is (National League president) Bill White sending out?” Reed asked. “As long as you don’t throw or punch somebody, everything else is fair game? If that’s the case, things could get nasty.”

Rocky Manager Don Baylor has publicly criticized Reed for staying on the bag while Galarraga slid in on a steal attempt.

“On plays relatively close you can get in and get out, but when the guy’s out by about 30 feet, which he was, you can’t get in and out because the umpire has to see the tag--you can’t sweep a tag, “ Reed said.

Reed said retaliation against the Rockies the next time the two teams meet, Aug. 9 at Dodger Stadium, is not in the picture. “We are still in this race and we have been dealt a blow. We aren’t thinking about retaliation.”
