Huntington Park : City-Sponsored Workshops to Aid Area Business Owners
The City Council has allocated $87,000 in state and federal funds for a center to teach classes to area business owners.
The center, scheduled to open in July, will offer free workshops in accounting, merchandising, counseling and technical assistance. It will be administered by the Valley Economic Development Center in Van Nuys, which has set up similar centers in other cities.
“We figure since we have such an extensive business (community) already, why not just bolster it through educating the business owners?” said Jack Wong, director of community development. The payoff, he said, will come through increased sales tax revenues.
Many of Huntington Park’s business owners, Wong said, are immigrants who might not have the business training to run a successful restaurant, shop or grocery store. A recent study of the downtown business district found that 51% of owners are Latino, 17% Asian, 14% Middle Eastern and 9% Anglo.
