Orange County women who have shown outstanding leadership in the fields of humanitarian aid, health, the environment, education, youth service and business will be honored todayat the presentation of the American Red Cross Clara Barton Awards.

Red Cross President Elizabeth Dole, former U.S. secretary of labor and transportation, will deliver the keynote address at the Newport Beach luncheon and ceremony, which organizers hope to make an annual tradition in the county.

The awards were named for Red Cross founder Barton, a pioneering humanitarian and educator who also crusaded for women’s suffrage. A seventh award, given out for “Breaking the Glass Ceiling,” will also bear Dole’s name, honoring her consistent success in the traditionally male-dominated government ranks.
