FOUNTAIN VALLEY : District to Contract for Food Services

Share

The Fountain Valley School District will contract out its food services this coming school year.

The Board of Trustees last week approved a contract with Preferred Meal Systems West Inc. of Irvine to supply hot meals four days a week, said Diane Sharpe, food service director.

On the fifth day, the hot meal will be pizza. The district is negotiating with a separate vendor to supply this popular food at all the schools. About 2,000 students daily buy a hot meal for lunch.

Sharpe said that about half the district’s 11 schools offered pizza this year. Since it was such a hit--with sales doubling on the day pizza was sold--the district plans to offer it at each of the elementary and middle schools. Students will pay $1.50 for the pizza meal.

District officials said that under the new contract, savings will be realized from the discontinued use of the central freezer, reduction in personnel, new ticket and accounting systems, streamlined meal purchase procedures and reduced maintenance costs.
