IRVINE : Arts Program Funds May Be Restored
An arts program at elementary schools slated for cutbacks under the Irvine Unified School District’s 1993-94 fiscal year budget might yet be spared by the Board of Education.
Even though the cuts were approved when the board passed a tentative budget last week, officials said full funding could be restored later this year.
As it stands now, the students receive six art lessons a year ranging from watercolor painting to sketching. If the cuts are made, the students would receive only three lessons a year, said school board member Margie Wakeham.
Wakeham said the school board may consider using about $70,000 in contingency funds to pay for the full program. But a decision on the issue won’t be made until a final budget is approved later this summer.
