SANTA ANA : Ideas for Alcohol, Drug Fight Sought

Residents are invited tonight to attend a meeting of a grass-roots group organized to combat drug and alcohol problems in the city.

Project SABADO, which stands for Santa Ana Broad-based Alcohol and Drug Organization, is a county-funded group that was formed to hear residents’ worries about substance abuse and come up with ways to address them, said Arlene Saralegui, project director.

One potential topic of discussion, Saralegui said, is the availability of liquor.

“In Santa Ana, there are 475 liquor licenses in 27 square miles,” Saralegui said. “That takes into account restaurants and mom and pop stores. We’re not talking about closing them down, but we’ll look into how owners can sell liquor more responsibly.”

Other topics include billboard advertising, drug-related crime, family alcoholism and domestic violence.

Project SABADO will meet at 6:15 p.m. at the Madison Elementary School media center, 1124 Hobart Ave.
