SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO : Gang-Style Attire Banned at Schools
Any gang-related attire, from caps to oversize khaki pants, will soon be banned on all campuses in the Capistrano Unified School District under a new dress code approved this week by the Board of Trustees.
With the new regulations, students will be prohibited from wearing such things as wool plaid shirts with baggy khaki pants, combat boots with flight jackets, chains, hair nets, bandannas, dangling belts, gang monikers, altered overalls or any other combination of clothing considered by law enforcement agencies to be gang-related.
Trustee Annette Gude urged officials to keep as up-to-date a list as possible of gang-related clothing since styles change frequently.
The dress code also prohibits students from wearing any items that “compromise safety or modesty” or include language or symbols involving violence, sex, drugs, alcohol or tobacco, or that include symbols, signs, slogans or words degrading any gender, cultural, religious or ethnic values.
The district code allows schools to develop more strict guidelines if necessary.
School officials will soon send bulletins to parents telling them what types of clothes will be banned.
