FASHION : The Clothes That Make the Mayor

Share

Don’t expect Mayor-elect Richard Riordan to show up for his inauguration today wearing anything fancy.

“You will see him in a single-breasted, navy blue, classic, elegant suit, with a white shirt,” said long-time Riordan clothier Rick Pallack.

Fashion watchers can look for the Riordan-red tie (a staple on the campaign trail), but precious little else in the way of ornamentation.

“His taste is very subdued,” Pallack said last week, as he prepared an assortment of lightweight wool, navy suits to send to Riordan’s office.

“No French cuffs (like those favored by client Sen. Edward Kennedy), no monograms, no Ronald Reagan pocket squares.”

The mayor’s Inauguration Day package also included a pair of plain black dress shoes, navy blue socks and a white cotton pocket square (perfect for brow-mopping under the noonday sun).

And His Honor’s hair? “Our responsibility,” says Pallack, “stops at the neck.”
