$1-Billion Jobs Bill OKd by Congress, Sent to Clinton

Lawmakers on Thursday sent President Clinton the remnants of his jobs bill, 10 weeks after Senate Republicans killed what once was one of his chief economic priorities.

The House approved the measure on a 280-138 vote. The Senate then sent the measure to Clinton by voice vote.

The bill contains about $1 billion for summer jobs, small-business loans and other programs that Clinton sought earlier this year in hopes of quickly boosting the economy. But the final version was a dwarf compared to the nearly $20 billion in spending in Clinton’s original package.
