SAILING : Montgomery’s Sloop Sets Pace
Jerry Montgomery’s 40-foot sloop Patriot from Alamitos Bay Yacht Club was setting the early pace in light winds in the 37th Transpacific Yacht Race to Hawaii on Thursday.
Patriot, averaging 5.5 knots, had sailed 104 miles since Wednesday’s start of the first group of smaller boats, and others had sailed only half that distance. In the IMS-C class, skipper Bonnie Gibson had the Cal 40 Antara in first place by handicap time.
Three more boats started Thursday. Twelve are scheduled to start today, followed by the last 16 on Saturday.
