WORLD IN BRIEF : GEORGIA : Russians Accused of Aiding in Fighting
Separatists cut off land access to Tbilisi, capital of the breakaway Abkhazia region, in an attack that Georgian officials said was aided by Russia’s military. The Russian Defense Ministry denied that Russian forces were involved. Georgian leader Eduard A. Shevardnadze flew to Sukhumi, apparently to rally the besieged city’s defenders and draw international attention to the conflict.
