Thousand Oaks school officials have appointed fifth-grade teacher Alan P. Friedenberg as principal of University Elementary School and have reassigned several other school principals.

During his 20 years with the Conejo Valley Unified School District, Friedenberg has taught at Conejo, Westlake and Aspen elementary schools. He also has written instructional materials and is a sought-after speaker in the western United States, school officials said.

Friedenberg has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Cal State Northridge and master’s degrees in sociological and philosophical foundations in education from CSUN and business education from Pepperdine University.

In other reassignments, Linda Hensley will become principal of Aspen elementary; Frances Smith will go to Acacia elementary; Lonnie Urbina will move to Glenwood elementary; Bernerd Carr will head Westlake elementary, and Linda Spellman will take the helm at Wildwood elementary.

The changes are needed to offer the administrators new challenges and to better match their abilities with the needs of the student populations at each school, officials said.
