MALIBU : Zoning Change Altered to Let Newspaper Offices Stay

Share

The city backed away from a rezoning proposal that would have forced the weekly Malibu Times out of the headquarters it has had for 45 years.

The City Council voted 3 to 1 this week to modify the proposed zoning change that would have made Las Flores Canyon a residential area. Businesses already in the area can now remain.

Publisher Arnold York said that his confrontational style of journalism and his belief in managed growth for Malibu led to the rezoning threat.

Mayor Carolyn Van Horn said no one wants to control the newspaper, but she did admit her dislike for York’s pro-development stance.

“The Yorks told me that they feel this community should have enough marinas and hotels to accommodate the world,” she said. “Their perspective on what is good for this community comes from that belief, and they have all the right in the world to believe it.”
