The Emir of Kuwait awarded a medal to Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, on Monday for his role in freeing his country from Iraqi occupation.

The official Kuwait News Agency said that Powell, on his first visit to the emirate, received the Medal of Excellence from Sheik Jabbar al Ahmed al Sabah.

Powell, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the most prominent American to come to Kuwait since a triumphal visit by former President George Bush in April. Kuwait says it uncovered an Iraqi plot to assassinate Bush during his visit.

Powell also held talks with Information Minister Saud al Sabah, who was Kuwait’s ambassador to Washington during the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Kuwait Radio said.

Powell was in his current post during Operation Desert Storm, in which a U.S.-led coalition drove Iraqi forces from Kuwait.
