SALVADOR : Third Latin Summit

Hoping to regain a place on the international agenda, the leaders of Latin America, Spain and Portugal will open a two-day summit Thursday in the historic northeast Brazilian city of Salvador.
The third annual Ibero-American summit will examine regional development issues and the complex problem of social justice in Latin countries, organizers said. Participants hope to attract support from the world’s rich nations, for whom Latin America has lost the significance it held during the tumultuous decade of the 1980s.
The summit’s most controversial leader, Cuban President Fidel Castro, has confirmed his attendance.
