BELL GARDENS : String of Firings Grows as City Attorney Loses Job

Share

Bell Gardens City Atty. Henry Barbosa was fired by the City Council Monday night, the latest in a string of firings inside the tumultuous City Hall.

Barbosa was fired because he apparently had a personality conflict with a majority of the council, said City Manager Charles Gomez. “There just was not good blood between them,” Gomez said. The final vote was 3 to 2 for termination.

He was appointed city attorney in January after the council fired Alan D. Gross. Barbosa had been acting as special counsel since a new City Council took over in March, 1992. He is also the city attorney in Lynwood, Montebello and Azusa.

Barbosa is the fourth highly paid administrator to be fired from the city this year. Others were the city manager, the assistant city manager and the city clerk.

He assured the council that he was not a quitter but was “apparently unable to provide counsel to the council majority consistent with the highest standards of my profession.”
