YORBA LINDA : Poll Shows Residents Want a High School

A survey of 400 residents found that many think a high school in the city is needed and that they would be willing to pay higher taxes for schools.

The survey, commissioned by the city in May, asked residents about a variety of subjects, including a ban on smoking in public places, a citywide composting program and forming a police department.

But most of the questions related to additional school facilities, particularly a high school.

“This survey is interesting, because nearly 90% of residents with children said we needed a high school,” Mayor John M. Gullixson said. “Even those who don’t have children recognized the need.”

The question was put to residents several ways.

First, people were asked to rate the need for more school facilities from 1 to 5, with 5 being the greatest need. Forty-six percent answered the question with a 4 or 5.

Asked about additional elementary school facilities, 32% answered with a 4 or 5, and 34% answered that way about more junior high schools.

Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed said they would be willing to pay higher taxes for additional school facilities.

The survey later asked whether respondents agreed or disagreed that Yorba Linda should have a high school within city limits. More than two-thirds agreed.

The survey also found that 71% support a ban on smoking in public places, and 75% support expanding composting, currently a pilot program, to include all residents. When asked if the city, which contracts for police services with Brea, should have its own police department, 49% said no and 43% said yes.
