World IN BRIEF : LIBERIA : Peace Agreement Near, Mediators Say

Liberia’s warring factions are close to reaching a new peace agreement and approving relief convoys to tens of thousands of starving people cut off by fighting, mediators in Geneva said. Rebel leader Charles Taylor has reneged on previous accords in the 3 1/2-year war, but mediators said they are optimistic because the parties are negotiating face to face rather than through intermediaries. In Liberia, however, radio broadcasts warned against “premature euphoria” about the Geneva talks.
