14 Women Post Victories in Japan

TOKYO —
Female candidates gained a record number of seats in Japan’s general election Sunday but still accounted for only 14 out of a total of 511 members elected.
The previous highest number of women elected was 12, at the last general election in 1990, according to Kyodo news agency.
Seiko Noda, 32, of Gifu, central Japan, became the first Liberal Democrat woman to enter the lower house of Parliament in 14 years.
By comparison, the U.S. House of Representatives has 435 members, of which 48 are women.
